Kein anderes Bild hat aufgrund seiner enormen Popularität und Strahlkraft eine derart wichtige Rolle für die Sammlung gespielt. In der lebensgroßen Büste eines nach schräg rechts gewendeten, älteren Mannes mit Prunkhelm und eisernem Halskragen meinte man lange ein Porträt des zehn Jahre älteren Bruders von Rembrandt, Adriaen, erkennen zu können. Tatsächlich stellt das Bild kein Porträt im herkömmlichen Sinne dar. Vielmehr handelt es sich hierbei um ein sogenanntes Tronie, also eine porträtähnliche Kopf- oder Charakterstudie mit starker Konzentration auf das dargestellte Gesicht. Obgleich diese Art von Bildern in der Regel nach einem lebenden Model gemalt wurde, sind sie nicht der Gattung des Porträts zuzurechnen. Da Tronies häufig als Demonstrationsstücke malerischer Virtuosität dienten, trat der ikonographische Inhalt meist in den Hintergrund. Dies gilt mit Sicherheit auch für den „Mann mit Goldhelm“. Das besondere Augenmerk des Künstlers lag hier fraglos auf der überzeugenden Wiedergabe der Bildpartie, die sich deutlich vom restlichen Bild abhebt und die bereits früh als „Hauptsache“ der Darstellung identifiziert wurde: dem reich verzierten Helm. Hierbei handelt es sich jedoch nicht um eine zeitgenössische Kopfbedeckung, sondern um eine spanische oder italienische Sturmhaube des ausgehenden 16. Jahrhunderts. Derartig aufwendig verzierte und vergoldete Helme konnten sich nur die höchsten und mächtigsten Würdenträger leisten. Bei dem dargestellten Goldhelm handelt es sich somit um eine große Rarität und Kostbarkeit, die der Maler im Bild durch Beleuchtung und pastose Malweise entsprechend aufwendig inszenierte. Erst gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts taucht das Werk aus einer Schweizer Privatsammlung auf, ohne zuvor in Fachkreisen bekannt oder publiziert gewesen zu sein. Wilhelm von Bode erwarb das Bild 1897, nachdem er in ihm ein eigenhändiges Werk des Malers erkannt und den Dargestellten mit Rembrandts Bruder identifiziert hatte. Entscheidend für seine Zuweisung an Rembrandt dürfte der Vergleich mit einem signierten Werk des Malers gewesen sein, dass 1891 für das Mauritshuis in Den Haag angekauft wurde und das sowohl dasselbe Model als auch dieselbe Malweise aufweist (Vergleichsabbildung). In der Folge erlangte „Der Mann mit Goldhelm“ als eigenhändiges Werk Rembrandts größte Beliebtheit und stand stellvertretend für Bodes herausragende Kennerschaft. 1986 wurde das Bild nach ausführlichen kunsttechnologischen und kunsthistorischen Untersuchungen endgültig abgeschrieben und dem Rembrandt Umkreis zugeordnet. Auch den neuesten Untersuchungen zufolge, stammt das Gemälde nicht von Rembrandts Hand, wurde jedoch höchstwahrscheinlich in Amsterdam in der Zeit von 1650-1660 produziert. Dies legt u.a. die typische Ausprägung des Bildes als eigenständiges Kunstwerk einer späten Tronie nahe. Der charakteristische Einsatz von Smalte sowie die Verwendung eines bestimmten, auch auf anderen Bildern des Rembrandtkreises auftauchenden Modells lassen zudem den Schluss zu, dass der Maler in Rembrandts Werkstatt gearbeitet haben muss, zumindest jedoch engen Kontakt zu dieser gehabt haben dürfte.| 200 Meisterwerke der europäischen Malerei - Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2019 :::::::::::::::::::: The Man with the Golden Helmet is today inextricably linked to the Berlin Gemäldegalerie and its eventful history. No other painting has played such an important role in the collection, thanks to its enormous popularity and aura. In this life-sized head of an elderly man with a splendid helmet and an iron gorget, turned diagonally to the right, it was long thought that a portrait of Rembrandt’s brother Adriaen, who was ten years older, had been identified. In fact, the painting does not represent a portrait in the conventional sense. It is rather a so-called tronie, a head or character study similar to a portrait with a strong emphasis on the depicted face. Although works of this kind were usually painted from a living model, they are not to be assigned to the portrait genre. As the purpose of a tronie was often to demonstrate virtuosity as a painter, the iconographic content usually took a back seat. This undoubtedly applies to The Man with the Golden Helmet. The artist’s particular attention was in this case unquestionably devoted to convincingly rendering the part of the work that is clearly distinguished from the rest of the painting, and was identified at an early date as the “main thing” about the picture: the sumptuously decorated helmet. This is not, however, contemporary headgear, but a Spanish or Italian war helmet of the late 16th century. Such elaborately adorned and gilded helmets were affordable only for the highest-ranking and most powerful office holders. The depicted golden helmet is thus an item of great rarity and preciousness, which the painter displayed in the work with appropriate lavishness through the lighting and pastose style of painting. The work emerged from a Swiss private collection only in the late 19th century, without having previously been known in expert circles or having been published. Wilhelm von Bode acquired the painting in 1897, having identified it as a work by the hand of Rembrandt himself and the subject as his brother. A decisive factor in his attribution to Rembrandt may have been comparison with a signed work by the artist that was bought in 1891 for the Mauritshuis in The Hague and appears to show both the same model and the same manner of painting. Subsequently The Man with the Golden Helmet came to enjoy great popularity as work by Rembrandt’s own hand, and to represent Bode’s outstanding connoisseurship. In 1986, following thorough investigation using technological and art-historical methods, the attribution was withdrawn once and for all, and it was designated a work by Rembrandt’s circle. According to the most recent examinations, too, the painting does not derive from Rembrandt himself but was most probably produced in Amsterdam in the period between 1650 and 1660. This is indicated by, among other things, the typical manner of the picture as an autonomous work of art in the form of a late tronie.
